A Dream Trip to Enchanting Venice

Venice is one of the most enchanting and romantic cities in the world. It's a place like no other, built on a group of 118 small islands connected by canals and bridges. No roads, just sweeping waterways. As you arrive in Venice, whether by water taxi, gondola, or cruise ship, the sight of this floating city is breath-taking. Colourful buildings rise from the shimmering blue waters of the lagoon like a vision from the past.

Glide along the Grand Canal on a gondola and soak in the stunning medieval architecture surrounding you, like the red Gothic arches of the Doge's Palace and the domes of St. Mark's Basilica glistening in the sun. My first gondola ride was a sensory delight, as I lazily floated under bridges and past magnificent palaces and churches while my gondolier sang traditional love songs. It's the quintessential Venetian experience.

Venice is a walker's city, so spend your days wandering winding cobblestone streets and connecting bridges, discovering quiet squares, grand churches filled with art, and bustling marketplaces. Stop for Bellini cocktails and tasty cicchetti at an outdoor bacari wine bar. One evening I stumbled across a small square as church bells tolled and witnessed locals emerging from their homes with baskets of groceries—a glimpse into everyday Venetian life.

Must-see sights include St. Mark's Square, surrounded by remarkable architecture. Tour the gold-encrusted St. Mark's Basilica and view its pink and white marble façade and domes. Climb the Campanile bell tower for panoramic views of Venice's sea of red rooftops and church spires. The square comes alive at night when cafes like Caffe Florian host small orchestras playing beautiful music.

For an escape from the bustle of the main islands, visit Burano with its rainbow-coloured houses and lacemaking heritage, or Murano and Torcello to see glassblowing and mosaics. The outer islands offer a glimpse into quieter Venetian Island life. Or get lost among winding canals and alleyways, discovering your own hidden gems of Venice without an itinerary. Although the city gets touristy, plenty of solitude and romance can be found.

Experience Venice's festivals, like the elaborate Carnival with masks and costumes, the Vogalonga regatta, or the Venice Film Festival. Whether dancing at Carnival or watching the sunset over gondolas on the Grand Canal, the enchantment and mystery of this iconic floating city will draw you back again and again. If you've never experienced Venice's splendour, visit and lose yourself in its romance and atmosphere. It's a dream trip you'll never forget.
